The Dremel Idea Builder 3D Printer is currently one of the most popular 3D printers available on the market today. It’s also rated pretty well on many sites so I thought it’d be a good idea to go over some of the product’s features for those interested in buying one. I’ll try to cover as much as I can, like a review, to help you decide whether this is the right product for you. After all, there are so many different choices available and it’s important to get something you’re happy with. Features

The included SD card comes loaded with a database of objects you can build without the use of a computer being connected to the machine. You’ll access these via the 3.5″ IPS color touch panel located on the front. You also have the option to add your own designs to the SD card or use a USB cable to transfer the designs.

One really nice feature is that the filament extruder comes pre-installed unlike some other brands and models which require you to install the part yourself. This allows you to jump into building your projects without much hassle. Most people say you can be up and running within about 10 minutes after opening the box.

3d printer filament It comes with easy-to-use software to build basic customized 3D creations. You can also import your own designs from either the STL or OBJ format and have the included Dremel software convert it into a usable file for the machine. You can use multiple colors during the build process but you’ll need to pause the printing and switch the filaments manually. One of the important factors when choosing a 3D printer is the size of the build area. This determines the maximum object size you can create. Some people break their models down into smaller parts if that becomes a limitation for a design, then they piece it all together to form a bigger object. The software does have a “scale” feature to shrink your imported model into an acceptable size for the machine to handle.

I’ve included a picture of an example of something large you can build with the included software. The build area of the Dremel 3D Printer is 9″ x 5.9″ x 5.5″, in case you’d like to create an outline of that on a piece of paper to get an idea of what you’ll have to work with. I’d like to note that the build time varies depending on the size of the object, bigger models can take hours to complete.

Conclusion

If you’re in the market for a brand new 3D printer this is definitely one I’d recommend you consider. A product like this does require a bit of technical knowledge but it is one of the easier models to use. The biggest complaint seems to be that the filaments can occasionally get stuck in the extruder. Dremel includes a special tool you can use to help keep everything operating smoothly.

I should mention that Dremel recommends you only use their filaments and using another brand will void your 1-year warranty. Having said that, other users have stated that other filaments do work with the machine. Do so at your own discretion.
